Berlin, October 24th - Merantix Healthcare’s AI software Vara™️ gained regulatory approval to automate breast cancer screening in Europe. It is the first-ever German AI software enabling radiologists to focus on difficult images by automatically filtering out healthy ones.
Vara relieves radiologists from repetitive work by filtering out healthy images.
Merantix Healthcare announces that its Artificial Intelligence software Vara has secured CE marking to automatically sort out healthy mammograms in breast cancer screening. With Vara, radiologists can dedicate their valuable time to difficult images.
Due to an increasing shortage of specialized radiologists, millions of women do not have access to breast cancer screening. Although up to 97% of all mammograms are healthy, multiple radiologists still have to assess every image manually. In light of increasing time pressure, this is an exhausting and error-prone job for radiologists worldwide.
It is Merantix Healthcare’s ambition to make breast cancer screening affordable worldwide. “Nowadays, health insurers pay millions for repetitive, assembly-line work. Vara can do it for a fraction of the cost. We accelerate the transition to a more economic reimbursement model in times of heavily rising healthcare costs,” explains MX Healthcare’s CEO Jonas Muff.
CE approval underlines that Germany is at the forefront of AI-based cancer diagnostics. The Berlin-based AI company has already formed alliances with multiple radiology groups and teleradiology providers across Europe to bring Vara to nationwide screening programmes. Today, Vara is being deployed in five European countries.
Vara has been trained on one of the world’s largest breast cancer datasets with millions of images backed by clinical ground truth data and expert annotations. During first clinical roll-outs, Vara demonstrated a significant workload reduction while maintaining highest confidence in ruling out uncritical images.
Vara is Germany’s first approved AI software for cancer screening. Dr. Moritz Brehmer, the company’s chief radiologist, underlines that this milestone was only achieved thanks to an “encouraging team effort of many involved key opinion leaders within Germany’s screening programme, which shows that Germany is at the forefront of world-class cancer diagnostics.”
